Book Awards

Miles Franklin Literary Award – an Australian award focusing on works of high literary merit that best represent Australian life.
NSW Premier’s Literary Awards – a series of literary awards which honour the achievements of Australian writers.
Literary – publishes over 250 Australian, American, British, Irish, Canadian and New Zealand book awards, including shortlists & results and author biographies.
The Man Booker Prize this prize aims to promote the finest in fiction by rewarding the best novel of the year by a citizen of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.
The Pulitzer Prizes- these prestigious American awards include categories such as journalism, books and music.
Barbara Jefferis Award –  this award is focused on finding the ‘best novel written by an Australian author that depicts women and girls in a positive way or otherwise empowers the status of women and girls in society’ (
The Hugo Awards – science fiction’s most prestigious award.
Aurealis Awards – these awards are for works of speculative fiction written by an Australian citizen, or permanent resident, and published for the first time the year the award is presented.
The Prime Minister’s Literary Awardsnow in its sixth year, the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards continue to recognise and reward excellence in Australian literature and history.
Costa Book Awards – the Costa Book Awards is one of the UK’s most prestigious and popular literary prizes and recognises some of the most enjoyable books of the year by writers based in the UK and Ireland. It’s unique for having five categories: First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book.

    well, I think the Barbara Jefferis Award would go nicely on your list of book awards, especially as you support the Australian Women Writers Challenge. Of course the Jefferis is not for women writers but it’s interesting how, because of its focus on characterisations of girls and women, women writers tend to fulfill the conditions of the Award. This year, however, Frank Moorhouse is shortlisted, possibly the first male writer shortlisted. First and foremost it’s a literary prize though; one of the richest in Australia. I have an ulterior motive of course, as I’m on the shortlist this year 🙂
